➽ The exhibition | Artist’s statement

I am a Malaysian artist born in the year of the Water Tiger. When I was little, I did something that caused my mother to say to me, ‘In the olden days, they would sometimes K*ll tiger girl babies’. I had obviously done something really naughty, but I can’t recall at all what it was.

My mother’s statement did not reduce me to tears. In fact, I was left with a feeling of awe. If tiger girls were so strong that the only way to stop them was to K*ll them, well, that pumped me up and gave me a strange confidence. The Water Tiger, though, is the most docile of all the tiger elements. I’m happy with that.

Our family has several anecdotal stories that revolve around tigers. These are retold over and over when we gather as a family clan. They are always listened to, as if for the first time. As a result, the tiger has always been in my mind and part of my pattern-making.

Having grown up on plantations and near the jungle, I have seen the wild areas get smaller and smaller. We were so immersed in nature growing up. We were watching it being torn down, exploring it with a father who made us love it and a mother who was happy to let us just wander freely in the fringes between plantation and wild jungle, without a worry in the world. We never saw a live wild tiger though.

As I have always painted tigers, the more I have become frightened for them. From childhood, I think of them as mythical creatures. They are so elusive. The strength and power of the tiger has always been in demand. The continuing modern-day frivolous, brutal taking of their lives, the butchering of their bodies for totems, the draining of their blood for elixirs to enhance virility, and the display of preserved skins and heads to signify a vulgar kind of success and luxury – all of that repulses me. The continued destruction of the forest and the opening up of new highways put them in acute danger, making it easier for unscrupulous humans to find them as they wander, trying to find new territory. I feel a heavy sadness.

So as an artist, I try in a small way to support their conservation through the wonderful non-governmental organisation RIMAU, whose work is concentrated in the state of Perak. RIMAU provides training and livelihoods to the local Orang Asli communities living in tiger territory, where they work as rangers to curb poaching. RIMAU aims to attain a minimum of ten rangers per 100 square kilometres.

This exhibition, An Ambush of Tigers, is dedicated to the Malayan tiger and those who seek to protect them.

➽ The Artist | Rebecca Duckett-Wilkinson

A plantation childhood in the 1960s and 1970s. My parents nurtured us with nature, the routine of notebooks and painting, food, and gave us all a sense of style and love for heritage and the environment. Life was outside, barefoot. We followed our own paths.

I headed to Parsons in New York to be a print designer and textile weaver. I returned to Malaysia after this. In 1986, with my later-to-be husband David, we set up Owen Rebecca Designs in Kuala Lumpur. Malaysian flora and fauna on resort wear. With three children in tow, we built our home Tiger Rock on Pangkor, then moved to Penang. We founded the Tropical Spice Garden.

Two years in Jakarta saw us build an our phinisi Tiger Blue on the beach at Bira, Sulawesi. Voyage Indonesia began! Our return to Penang marked the restoration and move into a Kapitan Cina’s house on China Street, George Town. Ten years ago we restored a house in Italy.

I spend my time painting between Penang and Piemonte. Now I’m putting pen to paper to write and record my plantation childhood. I will always continue to paint with pattern and colours.

The artworks from the exhibition will be on sale. A proportion of sales receipts will be donated to RIMAU to support their work.
